In our previous post we’ve written about: 5 reasons why you should care about adsense? There I’ve promised to write a series of article about adsense optimization and this is the first part of the series. In this post we’ll learn about adsense ad format and placement. So, Let’s start with:

General Placement Rules:
It is been said to place Adsense above the fold. It is also to be followed in case of CPM (Cost Per Mile or Cost Per 1000 views) advertisements.
What is the actual “above the fold” area?
The area of a web page can be viewed without scrawling the page is called above the fold area. When any visitor lands on your web page, they first see the above the fold area. So If put adsense on the area, it gets the maximum chance to be clicked.
Placement rules with size:
Placement for Leader board Ad (728 x 90): As it stretches across the screen, it is widely used at the top, just or after the header. As it is the bigger in size, it get’s better CTR (Click Through Rate).
I also recommend you to use it just before or after header image (for Blog) and I suggest you to place it before the threads of between the thread (in case of forum).
Just like the following images:
Placement for Banner (468 x 60) and Half Banner (234×60):
Banner Ads are standard size for ads.This formats are widely used at the top, beside the header banner. As it is standard ad size, people can easily mark it as ad and it gets less CTR. So I recommend you to avoid it; Don’t use it.
Button Ads (125×125):This ad format is too small, so you can’t place it alone, because there will be more unused space left. If you place it as text ad it will not be able to catch visitors notice. Again, you can’t use it as image by mixing with other 125×125 ads. Because it against adsense policy.
Skyscraper (120×600), Wide Skyscraper (160×600), Small Rectangle (180×150), Vertical Banner (120 x 240), ads are best suit in vertical position.You may place these on sidebar.
Small Square (200 x 200), Square (250 x 250), Medium Rectangle (300 x 250), Large Rectangle (336 x 280) ads are also can be placed in sidebar. These ads are can be placed in your content area, before or after content.
