The process, how search engines work can be explained into three steps:

STEP 1: Crawling

STEP 2: Indexing

STEP 3: Serving Result

Crawling: The process how search engines discover the new (updated) pages is crawling. Crawling is a process run by a computer software program. This program send out search engine bots (also know as crawler, robot). It visits from link to link and find out the updated pages.

It is the big question, from where crawler start crawling? The crawler firstly target mazor directories like DMOZ, then Social Bookmarking sites like Digg, then previously indexed pages, and then submitted sitemap.

Indexing: Search Engine Bot while crawling a site if they find any new or updated content, they will search for meta tags to get proper direction. Then it will read the text’s and store it to the database. This process is called indexing.

What is SEO?

Search is the most common online activity after e-mail. Most of the internet surfers use search engine’s to find out information, images and videos. When we do search on search engine, it offer us a list of choice with relevant search results. Lets search on Google with “spots update”

We found ESPN’s website on the top but it had to struggle with other competitive site’s to get the first position. It’s the result of SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).  SEO means to do something to get the top position on search engine for certain keywords. It is the most competitive and free web service to promote website. To get top position, it requires time, consciousness, research and proper knowledge.

According to Comscore data in January 2010 more than 23.2 billion searches occurred on the internet and the first positioned site get the 42% CTR (Click Through Rate), 2nd positioned site get 12%, 3rd positioned get 9% and fourth positioned site get 6% CTR. So can you imagine? It is how much important to get the top position.
